West Seattle Childhood Photography | An afternoon with Grandma

The stories that I tell through my photography are not necessarily the grand stories of big events. The little everyday stories that make up our lives are just as important to me.

One of my mother’s many skills is sewing. So every time I need a pair of pants patched, a sleeve hemmed or a chicken poop hammock made (yes, this is a real thing and I promise, I’ll tell you all about it latter) I go to her.

For Halloween this year, my daughter wanted to be a witch. Being the good mother that I am, I promptly bought her a witch dress and hat at Goodwill when I was there by myself (it had nothing at all to do with the fact that I didn’t want to bring her with me and allow her to pick out her own costume while she begged for the most expensive thing in the store and decided that she wanted not one but two costumes because why not?)

Regardless of how it happened, I ended up with a witch dress for my daughter that was WAY too long. So, off to grandma’s we headed. It was the perfect afternoon – with the sun streaming in though the blinds. My daughter pawed through the ribbon and decided that she needed a bow on each sleeve (which my mom graciously attached).

Just an ordinary afternoon. An ordinary part of our day. An ordinary story that will mean the world to me when I look back at it ten years from now – or when my mother has passed.
